England continued their preparations for the 2018 World Cup with back-to-back international friendlies against Netherlands and Italy.
A Jesse Lingard strike saw the Three Lions beat Netherlands on Friday night, before Gareth Southgate’s side played out a 1-1 draw with Italy at Wembley on Tuesday night.
Central defence is a very interesting area for England at the moment, and Burnley’s James Tarkowski was given the opportunity to impress against Italy, while Swansea City’s Alfie Mawson was also named in the squad for the first time.
Manchester City full-back Kyle Walker actually played as one of the centre-backs in a back three for his country, meanwhile, in a decision that was very surprising.
There was no place in the squad for Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles, however, despite the 24-year-old, who has recently been linked with West Ham United, impressing for the Magpies during the 2017-18 campaign.
After watching Tarkowski give away a penalty against Italy, the Newcastle fans cannot believe that Lascelles, who is valued at £6.3m by transfermarkt.co.uk, was not given the opportunity to stake a claim.
